About Retford and Distict Wheelers
Retford and District Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in its present form since 1986, although historically there has been a local club in Retford circa early 1900's.
The Club is locally based in Retford with activities focusing predominately on road cycling, although occasionally we organise off road activities that run alongside our activities on the road.
We are friendly and informal Club and New Riders are always welcome to join us on up to three Rides as a Guest Rider, before becoming a full member of the Club.
We welcome cyclists from all age groups, although cyclists under the age of 16 require the supervision of an appropriate adult during Club Rides and must be comfortable riding the distance of the Club Ride.
Club Rides take place almost every Sunday of the year departing from Retford Market Square and feature a café stop usually at the half way point. Numbers permitting they are run as two groups, an A and a B Group, with the A Group providing a more social orientated ride and the B Group providing a faster paced ride, sometimes over a longer distance. Where possible the aim is for both Groups to head to the same café stop, arriving there at roughly the same time, giving riders a chance to swap between Groups for the return journey should they wish for a change of pace. However should only one Group be run, it will be run as an A Group ride.
Destinations and start times for Club Rides can be found in the upcoming events section of the website on the left of the homepage or our Facebook page, although typically Club Rides will leave Retford Market Square at either 8.00AM or 9.00AM depending on the time of year and destination of the Ride. Currently we run an Introductory Ride on the first Sunday of the month, with the third Sunday of the month usually being the longest ride of the month and the Rides on the remaining Sundays of the month usually being no more than 60 miles in length, depending on the time of year. Typically Ride lengths will be at there longest during the Summer and at there shortest during the Winter.
The Club also holds regular meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm at the Run Runner Public House, to which all members and those interested in joining the club are welcome. This is generally an informal meeting where the issues of the Club are discussed and agreed upon with all attendees able to contribute to the discussion.
As a Club we support and encourage our members are to partake in whatever activities they may choose. This may be at a competitive level includes in Time Trials, or racing in a variety of disciplines such as Road or Mountain Biking or Track Racing at a National and Local level. Or simply enjoying cycling as a way of keeping fit, or participating in Charity rides, Sportive Events, and Long Distance Events. In fact, the wealth of knowledge within the Club is vast!
We are affiliated to British Cycling, which we would recommend that Members join and The Cycling Time Trial Governing Body and as such we are able to host to events under these organisations umbrellas. Chief amongst which is our Open 10 Mile Time Trial, usually held in March, in which riders compete for the Paul Johnson Memorial Trophy.
The membership fees at this time are;
- Individual - £10
- Junior - £5
- Second Claim - £5.
- Family - £15
The Club has an annual 5 mile Time Trial (a great informal event) that precedes the Christmas Dinner and Trophy Presentation, held for the past few years at Markham Moor Inn.
The Club also holds an annual Hill Climb on Beacon Hill at Gringley on the Hill, and there after a downhill free wheel competition. Social events are also arranged throughout the year for families.
New members are always welcome.
