About Retford and Distict Wheelers
Retford and District Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in its present form since 1986, although historically there has been a local club in Retford circa early 1900's.
The Club is locally based in Retford and welcomes cyclists from all categories and all age groups, although cyclists under the age of 16 require the supervision of an appropriate parent or guardian during club rides.
Club Runs take place almost every Sunday of the year departing from Retford Market Square and run as two rides, an A Ride (longer route/faster pace) and a more social orientated B ride (shorter route/slower pace). Where possible the aim is for both rides to head to the same café stop, arriving there at roughly the same time. Giving riders the chance to not only obtain rest and refreshment, but also to swap between rides for the return journey should they wish for a change of pace. Destinations and start times for both rides can be found in the upcoming events section of the website on the left of the homepage.
The Club Committee regularly meets every first Tuesday in each month at 7:30pm at the Run Runner Public House, and all members and those interested in cycling or joining a local club are welcome. This is generally an informal meeting where issues of the Club are discussed and agreed with members contributing.
The Club is friendly and informal, and members are supported and encouraged to do whatever activity they choose. This includes competitions in Time Trials, Road Racing, Mountain Biking, and Track Racing at a National and Local level. Other members enjoy cycling as a way to keep fit, or participating in Charity rides, Sportive Events, and Long Distance Events. In fact, the wealth of knowledge within the Club is vast!
The membership fees at this time are;
- Individual - £10
- Junior - £5
- Second Claim - £5.
- Family - £15
The Club has an annual 5 mile Time Trial (a great informal event) that precedes the Christmas Dinner and Trophy Presentation, held for the past few years at Markham Moor Inn.
The Club also holds an annual Hill Climb on Beacon Hill at Gringley on the Hill, and there after a downhill free wheel competition. Social events are also arranged throughout the year for families.
